WHEN SHOULD I USE AN ELECTRICIAN?

If you are considering DIY work in the home or about to undertake significant home improvements, you need to make sure that the electrics are installed to a high standard.

Some electrical work in the home is subject to Part P of the Building Regulations and the easiest way to ensure that your installation complies with the regulations is to use W G Hodgen Ltd, who is a contractor registered to a competent persons scheme. (NICEIC)

If you are a Landlord or manage commercial properties, you will have additional legal responsibilities to ensure that you use a suitable person to undertake work and that your electrical installations are checked on a regular basis.

Periodic inspection explained

All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should therefore be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use. Such safety checks are commonly referred to as 'periodic inspection and testing'.

How often is a periodic inspection required?

Your electrics should be inspected and tested every:

  • 10 years for an owner-occupied home.
  • 5 years for a rented home.
  • 3 years for a caravan
  • 1 year for a swimming pool.

Other times when a periodic inspection should be carried out are:

  • When a property is being prepared for letting.
  • Before selling a property or buying a previously-occupied property.

WHY CHOOSE AN NICEIC CONTRACTOR?

The main benefit of using an NICEIC registered contractor are:

Safety and competence

Contractors registered by NICEIC are assessed on a regular basis to ensure that they are competent and capable of meeting the relevant technical and safety standards, codes of practice and rules of the Schemes they are registered to.
